WhatsApp is now making Communities available to Android, iOS, and web users after announcing the feature a few weeks ago. The new feature is designed to make it easier for users to join WhatsApp groups that are important to them. The sole purpose of launching Communities was to unite individuals and organizations with similar interests.
Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta, said in a statement announcing Communities, “Today we are delighted to share our idea for a new feature we are adding to WhatsApp called Communities. Since the inception of WhatsApp in 2009, we’ve concentrated on figuring out how to provide users with the experience closest to having a face-to-face discussion with a person, group, or loved one. Additionally, we frequently hear from people who use WhatsApp for community coordination and communication.
What is Community?
Similar to groups, WhatsApp Communities allows you to add more users. For instance, WhatsApp groups enable users to join a single conversation, whereas WhatsApp Communities will allow you to bring together groups with related interests. You can connect with your schools, neighborhood, camps, and other organizations by gathering related groups in one location.
On WhatsApp Web, you can find the Community tab in the top right corner of your screen, whereas for iOS users, it appears next to the chats and settings options.
How to Create a Community on WhatsApp?
1. On your app or WhatsApp, select the Community Tab.
2. Type in the community’s name, summary, and profile picture. The community name should not exceed 24 characters; kindly take note. Members should be able to tell from your description what your community is about.
3. Click the green arrow icon to add existing groups or create a new group. You can also create new groups to add under one community or add existing groups.
4. After adding the groups click the green check mark icon.
Notably, a user can create up to 50 more groups in addition to the announcement group. The announcement group can have up to 5000 members added. Any member of the community is welcome to join groups. “Your community’s announcement group will be created immediately. According to WhatsApp, community administrators can use this area to communicate with every member of the announcement group.
